week 12 post 2

When considering the issue of mental health, emotional intelligence in schools, and why the education system needs to be reformed, it is important to consider why people are upset in the first place. In general, the topic of mental health is not a commonly discussed issue in media or education and many Kids do not understand their emotions or how to cope with them from a very young age. A combination of being overworked, stressed, tired, confused, and lack of knowledge about emotions has lead to the highest levels of depression and anxiety that have ever been seen or recorded. Research has proved that this general spike in negative emotion and well being is due to poor education systems and the suppression of emotion.
For example in the article High GPA’s, low happiness?, a whole host of statistics prove this theory right. This and the suppression and misunderstanding of emotion explains why people are feeling the way they do. The studies included in high GPA’s, Low Happiness?, touch on how many students feel so stressed they must turn to drugs and alcohol. This same article says that “kids themselves report being exhausted. Teenagers need 9.25 hours of sleep per night, but the majority average only seven hours, and 25 percent get six hours or less. Younger kids are exhausted, too: first through fifth graders need 10-11 hours of sleep at night, but only 29 percent actually get that much.” and “Twenty percent of students at two Ivy League schools report “purposely injuring themselves by cutting, burning, or other methods.” These are just two examples of the very alarming things which education has brought children to. One of the other things is that with the rise in media children often see the happy side of people's lives and strive to be those people. This is dangerous because a true happy life requires all emotions and the importance of coping with those emotions healthily. Movies such as inside out are a great way to open the topic of emotion with children who are super young and super old. This is a refreshing thing to see amongst all of the fake positive media that is put out there.  These reasons are all extremely important for people to be able to approach solutions to this heavy issue and it aids researchers in the right direction.

    1. This is a large area of issues being discussed but I would start with reforming the type of work we ask from students as well as giving students and teachers positive outlets and more positive education on social media.
